Christmas and New Year
Our first married Christmas was really fun. We spent Christmas eve with the Goodwins then Christmas day with the Burkes. The fellowship with our family and friends was very nice. I also think that everyone loved the gifts that we got them, especially my parents and their new cordless phone ( :
The drive between Indianapolis and Terre Haute was quite interesting since fog was very thick the whole way. My strategy (which worked very well) was to follow the idiots who were driving about 70mph at about 10-15 car lengths back. That way I could see the upcoming turns and know if any accidents, deer, etc. were ahead. It was a stressful drive, but we got there in good time.
It was nice to go to church on Christmas day…It’s not an opportunity that I’ve had often in life. It helped to keep my mind on where it should be, the birth and significance of Jesus of Nazareth.
On another note, my parents got me a book on CSS (cascading style sheets) for Christmas. I’ve been reading it a lot over the last few days. For whatever reason, I’ve become very interested in web design…I can’t wait to work on Elston Height’s website. Hopefully I can develop this knowledge into a tool that I can use to serve God’s kingdom more, as I have with my guitar and music.
That was all a bit random, but I thought an update was long overdue. There’s a New Year’s party and church service at Camp Techumseh this weekend. It should be a blast celebrating our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY on Sunday! Later.
Gone like Frank Sinatra
We’re heading out for Christmas once Lindsay gets back from work (around 1:00). We’re first heading to Indianapolis to spend the afternoon and evening with Mike’s family…It won’t be long, but it should be fun. Then we’re driving late tonight to Terre Haute to be with Lindsay’s family on Sunday. Then we’re headed back to Lafayette on Monday. All in all, it should be a fun time. I’m sure we’ll have pictures and updates once we get back.
The Colts have a game today against the Seahawks. Of course, the games are irrelevant for multiple reasons right now (namely the loss of coach Dungy’s son), but hopefully we’ll get to see some of the game. It may very well be a Super Bowl preview!
P.S.- The title of the post eludes to the song “Gone” by Switchfoot, one of Mike’s favorite bands.
Love you all. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Such sorrow for the Dungy family
We cannot being to express our sorrow and grief on behalf of the Dungy family. This season has been so fun to watch. Last Sunday wasn’t even too much of a let down. I honestly felt the loss was absolutely necessary to prepare us for the playoffs. For such an amazing season to be paired with such a disturbing and sorrowful event is surreal.
I know that the Dungy’s are strong in their faith, and I’m so thankful they have that support. Our prayers will surely be with them.
On a very different note, our heating bill was absolutely outrageous this month! In order to save money, we have turned our thermostat down to 58 degrees and purchased a space heater. We’re hoping that a $17 investment at Wal-Mart will save us about $70/month on our gas bill. This little ceramic heater has actually worked really well. It’s only about a six inch x six inch x six inch cube, but it has raised the temperature in our living room to 70 degrees in a matter of two hours. So nice and comfy! We hope this experience will be good advice for you, our friends and family!
We love you so much. Please join us in prayer for the Dungy family.
Christmas presents
We’re all done with our shopping! We had almost everything a couple of weeks ago, but we were a little stumped for a couple of our gift recipients! Last night, we were able to find something for everyone. Now, we’ve just got to wrap all the gifts. I was off half-day today, since I have to work Saturday, and I meant to get some of the wrapping done. Unfortunately, I gave in to my desire to read my book! ( : I’ll probably wrap when we get back from the Children’s Christmas Party at church!
Love you all!
Graduation (cont)
Today is Lindsay’s graduation from Purdue. She’s fought it out through years of hating school in order to get to this day. I could not be any more proud of her than I am today…More to come later I’m sure.
Go Colts! Beat the Chargers.

My first time being published
Over the summer, a fellow member of the Cooks group and I submitted a “short communication” to the Journal of the American Society of Mass Spectrometry (JASMS). It has recently become available online, so I thought I would post an electronic copy for everyone to see…
For those who don’t know much about this type of journal, this is a “communication” which is basically a really short paper. Typical articles are much longer and much more involved. This one just explains an interesting phenomena that we saw over the summer. Also, I must give Amy the majority of the credit. She wrote virtually the entire article. However, it’s still cool to have my name on something finally.
